SARAH IS FREE

Lines of Hope: The Freedom of Dreams ~ Sarah Shourd
Sep 7th
Locked in a cell, your dreams are one of the only places you can go to feel free. There is a place in your subconscious where the countless restrictions placed on your body and spirit are temporarily lifted, where you can soar.
Wrapped in a scratchy wool blanket with a shirt wrapped around my eyes to block out the flourescent lights, my lonely cot at Evin Prison was a small comfort, a reminder that I had made it through yet another day. In our dreams, Shane, Josh and I could travel across the world, revisit the past and even venture into the future. I used to dream up adventures in the streets and markets of Tehran, I would talk to imaginary Iranian people and assure them of our innocence. I dreamed that I was finally allowed a cell mate; she was sad like me but we were together and she promised to teach me Farsi. I once dreamed that I was able to hide a kitten under my chador and sneak it into my cell, another time I received a surprise phone call from President Obama and yet another time my sweet mother came to visit me (which later came true) in a garden inside the prison. Those dreams were the only way that Shane, Josh and I could see the faces of our loved ones, hear their words and stay connected to the world we love.
Since I’ve been free, many of you have told me about your dreams about Shane, Josh and I over the last 2 years. Dreams are powerful connectors, so I’d like to ask you all to share yours here now, anonymously if you like, just like Shane, Josh and I did so many times during the brief time we had together in the prison’s open-air room. I’ll start with my own, one that I had while I was still detained:
I dreamed that I woke up in the middle of the night and the door of my cell was wide open. Somehow, I got a hold of some giant crayons. I walked down all the corridors, upstairs and downstairs. The bright lights were all on as usual but everyone was sleeping, even the guards, and there wasn’t a sound. Wearing a long white dress, I began to draw lines across the walls and cell doors. I drew a line across the whole prison, crossing it out and connecting all of us inside at the same time. The next day (in my dream), the investigators called me into the interrogation room and accused me of being the one who graffitied the walls. “How could I have done it when I was locked in my cell and I have no crayons?” I asked. “Anyway,” I said, “those marks are lines of hope. There are a lot of people trying to help us on the outside. It could have been any one of them that drew those lines. It’s art,” I told them, “it’s not a crime for them to give us hope.”
More than any other topic, Josh, Shane and I dreamed about the day we would all be freed. All 3 of us dreamed dozens of times about a big homecoming party, with everyone we had ever known in attendance. We called these “Temporary Freedom Dreams” and they helped us keep our hope alive, knowing that every day we were that much closer to the real thing.
Until Freedom, Sarah Shourd

VIDEO: Happy Birthday Shane: Shane Bauer in the eyes of his loved ones

Astounding Rally in New York for Shane & Josh ~ Sarah Shourd
Jul 30th
Hey Friends, Family and Supporters,
It was an incredible, peaceful, loving and heart-breaking rally in NYC to mark two terrible years of injustice for Shane and Josh. There were probably over a hundred people there and a ton of media. Alex was the MC; we opened with a moving Muslim Prayer from Mr. Shahid Mahmoud; there was theatre on the sidelines highlighting Shane and Josh’s conditions; Laura, Al and I spoke from the heart; Faraz Sneai from Human Rights Watch shared his expertise; Tegra led a chant, incredible signs were abundant; the crowd was dotted with masks of Shane and Josh’s beautiful faces; Farah brought amazing banners and we lined the square and people, so many incredible people! I met friends and relatives of Shane and Josh’s that I had only ever heard about (these guys have so many friends!), people I hadn’t seen in years showed up with kids in tow, there were parents-of-friends, friends-of-parents and many others supporters that have simply joined our campaign because they were morally compelled to.
The pictures will give you a better idea than my words can. Today, and this entire week, have been one of the most profound shows of support I’ve personally experienced since I got free; it gave me a small glimpse of all of the vigils I missed the first 14 months and the incredible work that was put into them. Enormous thanks to everyone who was involved in making this week happen; I know there are thousands upon thousands who were there today in spirit and trust me, your spirit came through. I think today really helped set the right tone and get out our message before the trial this weekend. I’m imaging all the candles being lit everywhere and all the prayers as I write this.

They want nothing more than the freedom to continue making this world a better place ~ Nazanin Boniadi, Spokesperson, Amnesty International USA
Jul 7th
Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal. By now those names should resonate somewhere deep in your psyche. They are the American hikers who were detained in Iran on July 31, 2009, while they were hiking recreationally near the Ahmed Awa waterfall in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Besides the obvious injustice, what makes the fate of these three young Americans even more tragic and ironic is that they embody all that is good in human nature. They are educators and peace-activists who have spent years serving others and helping indigenous communities. They want nothing more than the freedom to continue making this world a better, fairer place.
Their case has caused a global outcry by human rights defenders and organizations citing violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Iran is a signatory. After arresting them for illegal entry, Iranian authorities have broken numerous international laws by way of arbitrary detention, lack of due process, torture by isolation, and by denying them adequate legal counsel or consular visits.
Shourd was released in September 2010 on $500,000 (U.S.) bail, at which point she returned home to the United States and has been on a tireless campaign alongside the hikers’s families to free her fiance (Bauer) and friend (Fattal) ever since. If you Google the word “hikers” you will find that their “Free The Hikers” campaign website appears right at the top, second only to Wikipedia, a testament to just how far-reaching their collective efforts have been.
On June 3, 2011, I joined Shourd in Los Angeles for the campaign’s rolling hunger strike in solidarity with Bauer and Fattal. I was amazed by her courage, warmth and undiminished sense of hope in spite of all she has been through. It takes an extraordinary person to not lose faith in humanity when faced with such a grave injustice.
Bauer and Fattal remain in Iran’s notorious Evin prison on trumped-up charges of espionage. The hikers have not received a fair trial nor have they been formally charged with recognizable criminal offenses.
Media statements given by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggest that Iran may be seeking concessions by holding Bauer and Fattal captive, an act tantamount to hostage-taking. In fact, for many, this may bring to mind the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis when fifty-two Americans were held hostage in Iran for 444 days, only to be used by the Iranian government as political bargaining chips in its dealings with the United States.
The world cannot stand by while the hikers’s rights continue to be sacrificed in this game of political oneupmanship. Iran is obliged to comply with the provisions of the ICCPR, abide by international standards for a fair trial and allow Bauer and Fattal to return home to their families and loved ones immediately.

Hunger for Habeus Corpus ~ Margaret Roberts
Jun 18th
Hunger for Habeus Corpus – Thursday, June 16, 2011
I am hungry. I feel closer to Shane and Josh in their cell as I accompany them this day in hunger strike. I am hungry for justice, for their freedom.
I walk through the courthouse which I work at each day as an interpreter, and I see it through the eyes of Shane and Josh, and through my dear friend Sarah’s eyes. Each day I am reminded of the personal pain of loved ones and defendants facing criminal procedings, denied the freedom to walk out onto the street and on with their lives, painfully separated from their families. Guilty or innocent, either way there is pain. I am reminded of the importance of doing this work right, seeing the humanity of those whose lives I touch, knowing their rights and remaining always vigilant not to let them fall through the cracks in this frightening, powerful system.
These past two years, I have watched the bizarre mockery of a prosecution against Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal. They are in custody for political reasons, not because they have committed any crime, and not even as prisoners of conscience chosing to lead a movement against Iran – which they NEVER have had an interest or a hand in. They are being forced into that antagonist’s role because it is politically convenient for Iran’s powerful to use them in this way. It is a disgrace to the legal professions, to the idea of justice.
Should we choose to set aside our own humanity in order to show up for work each day? I have experienced the pains of injustice one witnesses from within the beast that is government and law. The ongoing captivity of Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer is a grave injustice. There are several people in a position to set it right, and each of those men shows up each day and decides NOT to: not to come to agreement with his colleagues and his conscience about the right course of action. I urge all who hold such power, to act from the core of your own humanity as a daily practice, and see the change that brings about. It is another, quieter, beautiful form of revolution that can be part of any revolution you already may embrace. Start today. Start with those you feel least tender toward, most suspicious of, those it is easiest to judge and stereotype and villify. Scrutinize your choices and actions toward them. Choose to free the innocent whose lives are in your hands. Let your power rest gently upon your, upon all people’s, humanity, not crush it.
We will strike until the simple humanity of hunger penetrates the lifelessness of beaurocracy and politics and brothers’ quarrels over the philosophy of governance. We will see these innocent men set free, we will see their humanity recognized. None of what we do means anything without that.

“Their love got me through prison and our love will bring them home” ~ Sarah Shourd
May 21st
Dearest Family, Friends and Supporters,
I began my fast today in solidarity with Shane and Josh. It makes me think of all the selfless things they both did for me while I was in prison. Once, I mentioned to Josh that I had been wearing the same shirt for 11 months and it had holes in it. I was angry that the guards hadn’t given me a new shirt. The next day, Josh came out with his extra shirt and gave it to me. He had two shirts and he gave me the blue one, his favorite. Another time, for Valentine’s Day, Shane used the last two pieces of chocolate that he had been saving for months and made me “prison pie” out of crushed cookies, butter, dates and chocolate. It was delicious. These acts of love defended us against the constant pain of separation from our families and the extreme physical and mental restriction of being imprisoned.
Now that I’m free, all I want is to give back to Shane and Josh for what they did for me. Their love got me through prison and it’s our love that will bring them home.
All my gratitude for your support,
NB: Join Sarah, Shane, Josh, their families, friends and people around the world in fasting for their FREEDOM! http://bit.ly/SSJfast

Innocence Conference ~ Sarah Shourd
Apr 20th
Cincinnati was a very good place for me to spend a few days. Though I felt out of place at first at the conference, once I started talking to some of the exonerees I realized how important it is for people who have been wrongfully detained and imprisoned to share their experiences. I met a man named Chris Turner from DC who was falsely imprisoned for 27 years for a murder he didn’t commit. Thanks to new, more advanced DNA testing he was finally proven innocent and given a second chance. Chris has a magnanimous spirit; he and I talked a lot about the psychological effects of prison and PTSD symptoms we are both dealing with. Shane and Josh now have some news friends waiting to coach them through the aftermath of their experience when the time comes.
Some of our country’s best lawyers were at the conference; and countless others committed to building a global network for innocence work. Of course there’s not much that these good people can do to help Shane and Josh, since they’ve been so blatantly denied legal recourse, but we did generate some new ideas and they promised to spread the word through their network.
I’ll end with a picture that I took at the conference with a a group of wrongfully detained people from Ireland, Japan, Canada, Nicaragua and Mexico. We left two empty spaces in the photograph for where Josh and Shane should be standing. It’s not hard to picture them there.
To the Obstinacy of Truth,
Sarah Shourd
