FREE THE HIKERS RALLY HELD AT BERKELEY [UPDATED]
Aug 31st
Thank you to everyone who showed up in support of Sarah, Shane and Josh!
ORIGINAL POST:
There will be several events on UC Berkeley campus to build public awareness around our friends Shane, Sarah, and Josh, who have been detained by Iranian security forces and have been imprisoned for a month with no contact.
This post is to ask for your help, to remind you to come out, and to let you know specifically how you can plug in. Please read it carefully, and reply with your RSVP when you are done. Thank you for your support!
WHAT TO WEAR:
Dress like a hiker. Hiking boots, backpacks, water bottles, “hiker” style hat. The idea is to draw attention to ourselves by differentiating ourselves from the other folks on campus so try to pick something that college students wont be wearing and something they will notice as hiking related.
WHEN+WHERE TO MEET (see map)
11:30 AM – Lower sproul plaza by the bear statue (checkin and orientation)
1:15 PM – Alumni House (press conference support)
WHAT TO DO:
- Please remember that this is not a political protest. There is no “target”. We don’t want an oppositional demonstration vibe, we want a “support our friends” vibe.
- If the media contacts you, please DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS. Refer them to the press contacts we have designated. Make sure you ask us who is the press contact when you check in with us
- HANDBILLS: The majority of us will be handing out flyers 12-1 on sproul. If you can join us youll be talking to people passing by about what has happened, giving out flyers. Meet us at 11:30 AM so we can figure out who is doing what! Make sure you ask them to do one of the things listed on the flyer.
- POSTING FLYERS: A few of us will be going around in pairs posting up flyers around campus.
- PRESS CONFERENCE SUPPORT – We want to get people down to the press conference to act as a support and a buffer in case there are any nutters or counter protesters. So if you can go to alumni house at 1:15
RSVP!!!
It would be really helpful if you can RSVP on this site to let us know whether we should expect you. If you cant make it, perhaps you know a friend of yours, or shane/sarah/josh’s you can encourage to come in your place. If you can bring any of the stuff listed below please rsvp so we know to expect it!!
WHAT YOU CAN BRING:
- 10 copies (or more if you can) of the flyer in color, please let us know. The flyer is available at this link: FREE THE HIKERS FLYER
- Staple guns / staples / or tape?
- Sidewalk Chalk
- Banners / signs bearing messaging “free the three” “we miss you shane sarah and josh” “bring them home”… etc.
- Bullhorn
